When a growing agricultural production plant needed to expand its hot water capacity to keep pace with increasing production demand, the instinct might have been to invest heavily in a brand-new system. But with Remtron Automation involved, a smarter path emerged, one that delivered a fully integrated solution at a fraction of the cost and complexity.
The Challenge
The client’s existing hot water system was no longer sufficient to meet the demands of their expanding operation. Rather than replace what was already working, the goal was to bring a second, reused hot water tank online and run both tanks in parallel as a single integrated system.
The application called for precise monitoring and control across multiple inputs and outputs, but it didn’t necessarily demand the full weight of a traditional PLC solution.
The Remtron Approach
During initial discussions, the Remtron Automation team identified the perfect fit: the Phoenix Contact Programmable Smart Relay Controller, a compact, cost-effective, and highly capable solution purpose-built for applications like this one.
Remtron supplied the complete control and monitoring package, with the LOGIC Controller handling:

The Outcome
The results spoke for themselves. By selecting the Phoenix Contact Smart Relay Controller over a full PLC, the project delivered:

In fact, the client found the controller so intuitive to work with that they’re already planning to expand the system further, with multiple recipes and additional functions on the horizon.
This project demonstrates that for many smaller automation applications, a traditional PLC isn’t always necessary. Selecting the right technology for the task can deliver outstanding performance while reducing both capital costs and implementation time.
